Health Without Borders: Advancing Binational Public Health & Human Dignity Across the Americas
FHAASE is a binational nonprofit organization committed to providing free, community-based medical, dental, and public health services and implementing human-based solutions to underserved populations across the San Diego–Mexico border region, Baja California (including Ensenada), Guatemala, and other parts of Central America. Our work is driven by a deep belief in human autonomy, community agency, and social equity, especially for marginalized, migrant, and refugee populations navigating systems shaped by displacement, poverty, and structural racism.
Our clinics, field teams, and community partnerships work to eliminate barriers to care through mobile outreach, preventive health education, emergency services, and long-term capacity building on both sides of the border.
Binational and Global Public Health
We offer a transformative field experience for graduate students in public health, medicine, social work, dentistry, and related disciplines. Interns are embedded in real-world, cross-border service initiatives, contributing to high-impact programs and learning from seasoned community health workers and local leaders.
Interns will engage in:
Direct care delivery at mobile medical and dental clinics across San Diego County, Tijuana, Ensenada, rural Guatemala, and border shelters
Comparative analysis of health systems between the U.S., Mexico, and Central America, focusing on access, policy, and outcomes
Health promotion initiatives built on culturally responsive, community-based models
Critical analysis of structural inequities and their impact on migration, access to care, and chronic disease
Inter-professional teamwork and systems thinking, addressing complex public health challenges through collaboration
Leadership and communication skill-building through public engagement, reporting, and education efforts
This is an opportunity to apply classroom learning to binational health challenges, while supporting communities on the frontlines of migration, health inequity, and resilience.
